Empathy!

In early 2002, I left Gujarat in search of something better. For me, those were the days of turmoil. I was boggled with questions on ethics, morale, humanity and so many other things that were going tangent to my mind.

Those were also my days of being a book worm, like a caterpillar, a voracious consumer. I used to finish off a book at a go. Orkut was my favourite social media platform. And on a day, I came across a beautiful story that I am reproducing here in my own words. This story gave me answers to some of the questions that were rattling my brains.

It was the rainy season. There was a continuous drizzle that seldom wanted a halt. The rodents were one of the worst affected since there was enough rainwater inside their burrows. A mouse happened to be out of its burrow and completely drenched. The poor life was cursing all the Gods in heaven for unnecessary rains. It was shivering. An eagle was flying high and enjoying the climate, clouds, raindrops and the overall environment. This eagle spotted the pathetic life of the pitiable mouse.

Eagle got into a dilemma, "Should I dart down to that mouse and help him or to stay in the sky and enjoy the flight?"

As destiny would work in favour of the mouse, the eagle flew down to the mouse and offered help. The mouse wanted nothing but warmth. It pleads that it would die of cold by shivering if it doesn't get warmth. The eagle had a look around. There was no dry warm place for the mouse.

The eagle took a call, it decided to keep the poor mouse warm and save its life. The eagle took the mouse under its wings. So close that the mouse was able to feel the warmth of the eagle. Sooner the mouse got back into life, energetic and wanted to enjoy itself. It first started jumping and running through the large feathers of the eagle. The eagle was also enjoying the tickling. The eagle started to ignore the dancing mouse, thought that the mouse would be grateful for saving its life.

Sooner, the mouse got into its usual habit of nibbling things. As the eagle had ignored the mouse, it did not realise the eventual things to come. The drizzling stopped. The mouse peeped out of the feathers to see the sun. It ran away quickly in search of a new shelter, not even ready to look back once and thank the eagle. Being with a great heart, the eagle did not expect gratitude from the mouse.

The eagle now tried to open its wings and fly.

It could not.

The eagle was flabbergasted, devastated to see its flying feathers had got nibbled into tiny pieces.
